Show respect for the diverse opinions, values, belief systems, and contributions of others
Designing for Diverse Opinions
For my Interaction Design 3 course, I designed a Museum App interface showing respect for diverse people by conducting user testing and designing for accessibility. During class time, I met up with multiple students and asked them to navigate through my app prototype so they could experience it as a user, explain to me how they felt about the process, and inform me of anything that they liked or disliked about the app. During this process, I respected their diverse opinions on my app and learned what they valued to better understand what users are looking for. I used this insight to design the app to accommodate diverse opinions and needs to ensure the app has an inclusive user experience. The app was also designed with accessibility in mind to accommodate all users. This was done by designing with web safe typefaces for easy legibility and comprehensible hierarchy for everyone, specifically people with poor eyesight. Large padding was applied to buttons as well as around them for people with mobility issues who may have issues tapping a precise part of their small screen. All colours used in the app have adequate colour contrast to accommodate for people who are colour blind or have poor eyesight. All design decisions made for the app were thought out with universal design in mind as well as the experience of users to show respect for all people.
Research and Design for Diverse Target Audiences
I have designed multiple personas to research, understand, and develop empathy for the target audience of any project. I show respect for diverse opinions through personas by researching what the target audience’s opinions are and designing my products to meet their wants and needs to respect their opinions.  Different people value different things and through creating a persona I can identify what my target audience values and ensure that they are considered when designing a product. Through creating personas and researching diverse perspectives I can show them respect and design to appeal to them and accommodate their goals, needs, opinions, and values. This is an example of one of those personas.
Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals
Teamwork to Create a Presentation
I worked in a group for our design thinking methods project as a part of our Design Thinking and Strategy course. We achieved our goals by working together to research our topic, complete tasks, and present our findings. Each of us had specific tasks to complete to achieve the goals we set each week. We worked independently and together during meetings so we could make group decisions, contribute to each others’ ideas, and help each other out when we encountered an issue. We each had group roles and responsibilities to keep each other organized and on track. My role was facilitator/leader where I informed my group of what information needed to be found and added to our presentation and, assigned tasks to each person to evenly break up the work between us. I effectively contributed to working relationships by collaborating with my group to research and create a presentation that achieved the goals of the project.
Collaborating with a Team
I did a group project for my Motion Graphics course where we worked together to create an animation for the St. Lawrence College Graphic Design Second Year Exhibition. I interacted with my group in ways that contributed to effective working relationships by, working together to come up with ideas, helping each other out when we were having issues, and showing my work to my group members for feedback. We met up each week to discuss what we needed to get done in order to stay on track and meet any deadlines. To divide the workload evenly, each of us was assigned a different part of the animation to complete individually that would be incorporated into the final animation. As a group, we brainstormed ideas, helped each other complete our tasks, and gave each other feedback on our work. I completed my portions of the project on time and promptly sent them to my group members so they could incorporate them into the final animation.
